CNC Machining Terms
The CNC Machining industry has many specialized terms for tooling, machines, and other technology. Here is our list of things to know about machining with CNC equipment.
Blueprint Reading - The term blueprint reading means that someone interprets ideas that are on a drawing or print.
CAD/CAM Software – CAD is the acronym for Computer Aided Design. CAM is the acronym for Computer Aided Manufacturing. They are computer software that are used in the manufacturing industry.
Caliper – A measuring tool that is used to measure internal and/ or external dimensions on machined parts.
CNC Lathe – A CNC Lathe is an acronym for Computer Numerical Control Lathe. It rotates a workpiece around an axis while tools cut the part. The machine’s movement is controlled by a CNC program which is called G-code.
CNC Machining – Is the process of manufacturing parts on a computer numerical controlled machine.
CNC Programming – CNC Programming is the term used for programming a computer numerical controlled machine. It is typically programmed using G-code, by a CNC programmer.
Lathe Machining – It is a machining process on a machine that rotates the workpiece around an axis. The cutting tools are typically held in a turret on the machine.
Machining Automation – This refers to the automation that can be used in the machining process. The automation might be a barfeeder, cobot, robot, or gantry part loader.
Machining Center – Is a advanced and complex CNC machine that can preform many kinds of machining techniques.
Machining Certification – A machining certification could be a completion of a machinist apprenticeship, or a certification for a machining process or technique.
Machining Equipment - Machining Equipment is machine tools, cutting tools, coolant, and any other equipment that may be used to aid in the machining and manufacturing process.
Machining Operations – May include turning, milling, drilling, broaching, and grinding. They typically remove material in the manufacturing process.
Machining Process Control – Ensures that the machining process is accurate and efficient. It could include process monitoring and quality control methods.
Micrometer – A micrometer is a inspection tool that provides accurate measurements for quality control in the machining industry.
Milling – To cut material using a rotating tool. May be called endmilling also.
Milling Machines – A machine tool that removes material from a workpiece with a rotating cutting tool.
Precision Machining – Is the process of manufacturing close tolerance parts with specialized machines.
